Derek Murphy is vice president of New Construction Aircraft Carriers at Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, located in Newport News, Virginia. Named to this position in 2025, he is responsible for all Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers currently under construction at the shipyard, including John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), Enterprise (CVN 80) and Doris Miller (CVN 81).
Murphy began his career with the company in 2002 as a Northrop Grumman employee. He first served as an aviation program manager as part of the EA-6B and EA-18G programs. In 2007, he joined the Ingalls Shipbuilding division, where he held positions of increasing responsibility, including National Security Cutter Program director and FFG(X) Program director, which included strategy, ship design, cost, customer interaction and bid and proposal activities for the next-generation frigate program. Murphy also served as director of Ingalls Shipbuilding’s Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul program before joining HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division in 2020 as John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) program director responsible for all aspects of construction.
A U.S. Navy veteran, Murphy has 20 years of operational experience as a naval flight officer for carrier-based A-6E Intruders and EA-6B Prowlers aircraft. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Villanova University and an MBA from Eastern Michigan University.
