HII team gathered at a leadership development event

Professional & Leadership Development

Here you can build your career and future with valuable educational and training programs that span our shipbuilding apprentice schools in Virginia and Mississippi to national conferences and tuition reimbursement programs that support continual career growth at every stage of your career.

Formal and informal educational opportunities are available to all employees, including leadership and personal development courses, mentoring, town halls, lunch and learns, ERG programming and panels.

Online learning and opportunities including Percipio eLearning, Coursera Massive Open Online courses, Gallup access, and assessments and self-awareness tools.

Tuition reimbursement and education assistance with certifications, professional courses, and Associates, Bachelors, and Master’s degrees are available.

You can work with your leadership for development in place opportunities (project leadership and stretch assignments) or to be nominated for rotational assignments, Project Management boot camp, committee membership, executive education, professional organization participation, and other engagement and leadership development opportunities.

Ingalls Shipbuilding offers the Supply Chain Academy, Business Management Academy, and Defense Acquisition University. Employees can also sign up for Craft Career Counseling sessions, where employees can get help in reviewing their career path and goals, applying for positions, resume writing, and interview assistance.

In partnership with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, free courses are available to learn new skills and sharpen existing ones in areas such as principles of management, excel, and blueprinting reading.

The Generational Integration Focus Team (GIFT) employee resource group recently hosted the Start Here, Grown Here Symposium to help shipbuilders learn about the many opportunities for professional development and career growth for all generations, including breakout sessions on leadership development, stress management, organizational skills and public speaking, mock interviews, and leadership tutorials.

Mission Technologies has the MyCareerCompass tool to help you chart your career path, find relevant training, and explore new chapters in your career development. You maintain your profile by adding and updating your skills, career interests, experience, education, or certifications which helps drive recommended training in the Learning tab of the tool.

Newport News Shipbuilding provides career coaching, mentoring and development, with abundant opportunities for current shipbuilders who are interested in growing with the company or seeking a new career path.

Community Service

HII invests more than $110 million annually in workforce development, education and training initiatives.

These initiatives begin by supporting early childhood education programs and continue with STEM investments in elementary, middle and high schools. It also includes the apprentice schools in Virginia and Mississippi and our academic partnerships with colleges and universities.

Thousands of our employees and HII departments and teams across the global give donations and volunteer time every year.
