Christian Ortego is vice president and chief counsel of Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, located in Newport News, Virginia. Named to this position in 2026, he provides legal advice and counsel to senior management and is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the provision of legal advice to the division.
Ortego joined HII in 2013 and served as counsel to NNS before transitioning to HII’s Mission Technologies division where he served as senior vice president and general counsel. He previously worked in private practice and at the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.
Ortego is a retired Navy Reserve Surface Warfare Officer Captain. During his 28-years of reserve and active duty service, Ortego held a variety of command and non-command positions, including onboard USS Gettysburg (CG 64) and USS Doyle (FFG 39), Commanding Officer of NATO and OPNAV reserve units, and a 2011 mobilization to Baghdad, Iraq.
Ortego holds a juris doctor from the American University Washington College of Law, a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Navy War College, and a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University. He is an active member of the Commonwealth of Virginia and State of Colorado Bars and the Association of Corporate Counsel.
