NEWPORT NEWS, Va., (Feb. 10, 2023) — Global all-domain defense provider HII (NYSE: HII) announced today that seven employees from its Newport News Shipbuilding, Ingalls Shipbuilding and Mission Technologies divisions were recognized for achievements in the science, technology, engineering and math fields during the 37th annual Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA) STEM Conference. The conference took place this week at the Gaylord Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.

“I am incredibly proud of these employees for setting the example of excellence across the company,” said Chris Kastner, HII president and CEO, who attended the conference. “There is a special energy in that ballroom among people who feel seen, respected and valued for their work. Five HII employees received the Modern-Day Technology Leader award, which recognizes efforts in shaping the future of engineering, science and technology. They are:

Marcus Jackson, engineer mechanical, Newport News Shipbuilding

Ryan Jenkins, engineer mechanical, Newport News Shipbuilding

Isaiah Green, project manager, Mission Technologies

Two other employees received the Science Spectrum Trailblazer award, which recognizes efforts in creating new paths for others in science, research, technology and development. They are:

Jennifer Boykin, president of Newport News Shipbuilding, was a speaker during the awards presentation. Boykin shared that these seven employees are exceptional leaders who model the integrity and quality of the HII team.

Our backgrounds, experiences and even our personalities influence our perspectives. It is this diversity that enables us to engineer, build and overhaul the most complex ships on earth. Additionally, for the first time at BEYA, HII displayed Mission Technologies and Newport News Shipbuilding workforce training capabilities. Using the shipyard’s digital shipbuilding mobile experience trailer, BEYA attendees were able to experience first-hand tools being used by HII’s next generation workforce. Sharing the digital transformation taking place within HII, attendees experienced the visual work instructions on tablets, welding simulator, unmanned craft modelling and simulation, submarine engineering, and virtual reality and augmented reality.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., (Jan. 30, 2023) — Global all-domain defense provider HII (NYSE: HII) announced today that Eric Chewning, former chief of staff to the U.S. Secretary of Defense and deputy assistant secretary for industrial policy, is joining HII as executive vice president, Strategy & Development, reporting directly to HII President and CEO Chris Kastner. Chewning assumes the role on Jan. 30.

Chewning joins HII as it grows its customer set across the armed forces and executes on its significant shipbuilding backlog for its primary customer, the U.S. Navy. HII is the nation’s only builder of aircraft carriers and its largest military shipbuilder; among defense technology distinctions it is the world’s largest producer of unmanned underwater vehicles, the largest aggregator of cyber data across the U.S. Department of Defense, and sole developer and operator of the department’s largest LVC (live, virtual and constructive) training enterprise that leverages artificial intelligence to maximize readiness while reducing costs.

With 20 years of experience in national security markets, Chewning will guide HII’s corporate strategy, including identifying new opportunities for growth, cross-division collaboration, and potential investment.

Most recently Chewning was the Americas co-lead for the aerospace and defense practice at McKinsey & Company. A former U.S. Department of Defense senior official, he served as the chief of staff to the Secretary of Defense, advising on all policy, operational, personnel, and budgetary matters, and driving senior leaders towards execution of the national defense strategy. Prior to that role, Chewning served as deputy assistant secretary of defense for industrial policy, where he was the principal advisor on defense industrial base and supply chain issues for the secretary.

Chewning enlisted in the U.S. Army after 9/11. He is a former military intelligence officer and veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Prior to his military service, he was an investment banker at Morgan Stanley, where he focused on corporate finance and merger and acquisitions in the global industrials sector.

Chewning received an MBA from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business where he was recognized as a Shermet Scholar. He also earned an M.A. in international relations and B.A. with honors from University of Chicago. He is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., (Jan. 24, 2023) — HII (NYSE: HII) announced today that Chris Soong has been promoted to executive vice president and chief information officer. Soong, previously the CIO at HII’s Mission Technologies division, will replace Bharat Amin, who will retire on March 31 after nearly a decade of service with the company.

In this position, Soong will be responsible for establishing the company’s information technology and digital strategic direction with a focus on cyber security capabilities. In collaboration with the business units, Soong will lead corporate IT governance and provide functional oversight. He assumes his new role on April 1 and will report to HII President Chris Kastner.

“I want to thank Bharat for his leadership as HII’s first companywide CIO, specifically in the area of cyber security,” Kastner said. “Going forward, Chris has the experience and familiarity to hit the ground running and ensure a streamlined, secure digital infrastructure that supports the business and adds value for our key stakeholders.”

Soong joined HII with the acquisition of Alion Science and Technology, where he served as CIO and senior vice president overseeing all aspects of the Corporate Information Technology group. He brings more than 25 years of experience in the IT industry and has held leadership positions at several Fortune 500 companies, including Booz Allen Hamilton and Sprint.

Soong holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Virginia Tech. He has a leadership certificate from the University of Maryland and participated in the CIO Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management. Soong was named the Corporate Category winner of the 2020 Capital CIO of the Year ORBIE Awards and was recognized as “One to Watch” by CIO Magazine and “Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business” by the Asian American Business Development Center.

Some of the employees from HII’s office near the Navy Yard, in Washington, D.C., will move to a new space at National Landing in Arlington, Virginia, in summer of 2023. 

HII will retain office space in the Navy Yard to facilitate the close working relationship with HII’s largest customer, the U.S. Navy. HII’s corporate headquarters will remain at the VASCIC building in Newport News, Virginia.

The new space in National Landing (shown in this rendering) enhances HII’s presence in the national capital region and enables better access to a wider set of customers across the services. The new location is minutes away from the Pentagon, Department of Defense and Reagan National Airport which facilitates quick travel with HII’s divisions, customers and stakeholders.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va., (Oct. 14, 2022) – Global all-domain defense partner HII (NYSE: HII) this week recognized four employees from the company’s three divisions and company headquarters with the inaugural Compass Award for Compliance, for advancing HII’s culture of ethics and compliance. A recognition ceremony was held Thursday.

“The demonstrated performance of these employees has positively impacted the way our company operates and ultimately the quality we deliver to the customer,” said Paul C. Harris, HII’s executive vice president and chief sustainability and compliance officer. “Each of them has enhanced the company’s compliance and ethical culture at multiple levels, which is critical to the long-term success of our company.”

This award will annually recognize one employee from each division and the HII headquarters for efforts in shaping the direction to reduce compliance risks. The first four HII employees to receive the 2022 Compass Award are:
