NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Dec. 23, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Continental Maritime of San Diego (CMSD), a subsidiary of Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE:HII), hosted toy and food drives at its facility to support local families during the holiday season.

With the help of employees, CMSD donated 162 toys to the San Diego Fire Station 7 “Toys for Tots” toy drive from Dec. 8-19. The toys were dropped off to the firefighters who will in turn give them as holiday gifts to children in need.

CMSD employees also helped wrap more than 300 presents for the Good Neighbor Project of San Diego holiday event. The Good Neighbor Project is a local non-profit organization that helps inner-city youth and their families.

CMSD also partnered with the Central Juvenile Service Team of the San Diego Police Officers Association. Central JST organizes a “Santa’s Village” benefitting more than 1,500 local third-graders and also sponsors other activities that benefit the children and families in the Barrio Logan.

Beyond the toy drives and neighborhood events, CMSD also hosted a three-week food drive from Nov. 24 through Dec. 10 to collect canned good and non-perishable items for the San Diego Food Bank and the San Diego Police Association’s Central JST.

“CMSD and our employees have participated in both drives for many years,” said Dan Flood, CMSD’s vice president and general manager. “This is our way of giving back to the families in need in San Diego County and to the neighborhood of Barrio Logan where we are located and where many employees live.”
