Shipbuilders from the Veterans Employee Resource Group (VERG) at HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division cleaned marble headstones of veterans at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Newport News on Saturday, April 29. The effort is part of the “By Memorial Day” movement in which patriotic volunteers work to clean every veteran headstone in America located outside of national cemeteries.
Greenlawn Memorial Park has special significance to shipbuilders as Homer L. Ferguson – president of Newport News Shipbuilding from 1915 to 1946 and founder of The Apprentice School – and many of his family members are buried there. VERG members, other NNS volunteers and their families cleaned over 60 headstones to honor those who fought for the freedoms Americans have today.
