At HII’s Mission Technologies division, innovation means finding smart ways to give proven systems new life and greater impact while we also create cutting-edge technological solutions.
Microelectronics obsolescence—the problem of outdated and unsupported computer chips—affects many industries, especially defense. Instead of completely redesigning aging circuit boards or microchips, HII engineers in southwest Virginia, led by Barry Polakowski, senior director of specialty engineering, have developed a smarter solution: reverse engineering and retargeting old components. This process transforms outdated chips and circuits into modern equivalents that function just like the originals—but at a fraction of the cost of a full redesign.
“Our team stands out—not just because of our technology, but because of how we approach challenges with agility and fresh thinking,” said Barry Polakowski. “We focus on delivering results and giving our customers an edge with solutions that address emerging threats.”
Microchips are the backbone of all electronic devices, and protecting their integrity is critical—especially for national security. For over 20 years, HII has partnered with the Department of Defense to tackle microelectronics challenges, developing techniques that help secure intellectual property and detect potential vulnerabilities in integrated circuits.
HII’s solutions support vital government operations.
“Our method reduces risks tied to outdated electronics,” said Steve Baka, engineering manager and HII Fellow. “Instead of scrambling for scarce replacement components or facing a costly redesign, our retargeting approach modernizes electronics efficiently—keeping systems running without breaking the bank.”
Beyond cost savings, this process also avoids counterfeit risks and cuts down on the need for lengthy testing and certification.
“When you buy a large stock of old microchips, hoping they’ll perform like a brand-new sports car, sometimes you end up with a clunker instead,” Baka explained, emphasizing the importance of sourcing reliable components.
HII’s expertise extends beyond obsolescence solutions—it includes microelectronics, circuit boards, and embedded systems, with specialized capabilities in reverse engineering, security assurance, and vulnerability research.
