Quality Planning Yard Services
Ingalls Shipbuilding Planning Yard
HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division serves as the planning yard for several U.S. Navy surface ship classes, providing engineering, logistics, modernization, and lifecycle configuration management support. For more than 45 years, Ingalls has delivered comprehensive Planning Yard services for CG 47, LHD 1/LHA 6, and Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) classes in active service. Ingalls delivers end-to-end lifecycle engineering, technical authority, and modernization support that ensures these ships remain safe, technically current, and fully mission-capable throughout their service lives.
Ingalls’ Planning Yard services include fleet modernization planning, technical authority support, lifecycle engineering, and configuration management. These capabilities enable reliable and timely modernization, reduce fleet-wide sustainment risks, and ensure U.S. Navy ships remain safe, mission capable, and ready to meet future operational demands.
Cruisers and Amphibious Ships
The Planning Yard for the CG 47 Ticonderoga-class cruisers and LHD 1/LHA 6 amphibious assault ships provides ongoing fleet support for engineering issues, modernization efforts, and lifecycle sustainment. Ingalls develops technical guidance, engineering change proposals, and design solutions that enable ships to receive upgrades during scheduled availabilities. Ingalls has supported these ship classes throughout their decades of service, maintaining configuration control and ensuring alignment with Navy standards.
Littoral Combat Ships (LCS)
Ingalls also serves as the Planning Yard for the Littoral Combat Ship program, providing engineering, design, and on‑site technical support across the LCS fleet. Responsibilities include configuration management of the ship class technical baseline, material procurement and kitting for modernization packages, and engineering solutions for emergent fleet issues. Through this role, Ingalls ensures consistent integration of upgrades and maintains supportability of systems and equipment throughout the ships’ operational life.
Newport News Shipbuilding Planning Yard
HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division serves as the planning yard for the U.S. Navy’s nuclear fleet, supporting several submarine and aircraft carrier programs. The shipyard provides technical support for, as well as life cycle and configuration management of, these vessels.
Submarines
The Seawolf- and Los Angeles-class submarine planning yard provides fleet support of technical issues for the respective ships. NNS also develops technical guidance to modernize submarines during various availabilities. The submarine planning yard has provided these services since the first Los Angeles-class submarine was commissioned in 1976.
Aircraft carriers
The Gerald R. Ford-class hull planning yard at NNS provides engineering and design support to the Navy for maintaining and modernizing Ford-class aircraft carriers from delivery throughout the ship’s lifecycle. The work scope includes configuration management of the ship’s technical baseline and uses a 3D product model to conduct virtual ship checks. This method enables on-demand support, technical studies and engineering expertise to be leveraged regardless of the carrier’s physical location.
NNS also serves as the Propulsion and Reactor Engineering planning yard, providing emergent fleet and shipyard support for reactor and propulsion plants on all Ford- and Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. This work, a part of our portfolio for over 50 years, supports new construction, refueling and complex overhauls (RCOH), and inactivations at NNS, as well as modernization and maintenance support in the Navy’s public shipyards and regional maintenance centers. The NNS planning yard supports nuclear work on U.S. Navy aircraft carriers around the world.
