NEWPORT NEWS, Va., May 19, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- HealthWaves, the wellness program at Huntington Ingalls Industries' (NYSE:HII) Newport News Shipbuilding division, hosted the seventh annual 5K fun run/walk Saturday to promote health and fitness for the whole family. The event attracted more than 1,100 employees, as well as their family members and friends.
"The 5K is always a fun event, and that's important because we want to promote exercise as a fun and healthy way to spend time with family members, friends and co-workers," said Brady Goggin, HealthWaves' senior program coordinator.
The 5K started at Victory Landing Park near the Virginia Advanced Shipbuilding and Carrier Integration Center (VASCIC) and went north on West Avenue to 35th Street. From 35th Street, participants crossed over to Washington Avenue and proceeded north to 50th Street before returning to cross the finish line at Victory Landing Park.
HealthWaves held two training programs to help prepare participants for the 5K. "Couch to 5K," which was available to all participants, began March 10 with weekly emailed wellness challenges. The "NNS 5K Training Group" held weekly group runs that began March 25 to help employees prepare for the event.
